Bourgas is positioned in Eastern Bulgaria and is the largest province in the country with some 7748 sq.m. in area. Proudly the fourth largest city in the country, it is and always has been an imperative economical, cultural, administrative, political and historical centre not only in the coastal area, but in the country as a whole.
Located on the coast of the Black Sea, it is 389 km. from Sofia, 272 km. from Plovdiv, and 350 km. from Istanbul and is picturesquely surrounded by the Vaya, Atanasovo and Mandrensko lakes.
The country’s most popular and beautiful sea resorts are also within a short distance from the city. Sunny Beach and Nessebar are only some 30 km. from Bourgas and the southern sea resorts of Sozopol, Primorsko, Duni, Pomorie and Sinemoretz are within a short driving distance as well. The Ropotamo River flows into the Black Sea about 50 km. south of Bourgas and streams by the deep forest and the “Lion’s Head” rock formation. Beautiful water lilies and interesting plant and bird species can be observed around the Ropotamo River and Nature Reserve. The river is 30 meters wide and home to more than 100 endangered floral species. The lake of Pomorie, 20 km. to the north is surrounded by salt mines and balneology resorts.
